Maintaining our rich tradition of home-grown kids’ TV is really important because children have a deep need to engage with stories that reflect their own experiences. When they recognise themselves in the characters that populate their favourite TV shows, kids feel immensely reassured because they see that they’re not weird or odd, that other kids are going through all this stuff too – and that it does turn out okay. Imported stories may deal in universal themes, but they cannot provide the vital spark of recognition that our own stories offer to our own kids.
